The Voice Of TESTAMENT Finally Tells His Story CHUCK BILLYs Memoir, Holding My Breath, Due In November

By Andy-War-Hall

He who sees the world beyond is forever haunted. So claims the Australian death thrash unit In Malices Wake as heard on Beyond Death from their latest record, The Profound Darkness. IMW last scourged the Earth with 2020s The Blindness of Faith, a sprawling, somewhat bloated collection of bulldozing thrash metal condemnations of religious manipulation and ignorance. With four original LPs and twenty-four years of independent musicianship under them, guitarist Leigh Bartley (Harlott), bassist Karl Watterson, drummer Mark Farrugia, and guitarist/vocalist Shaun Farrugia have returned with The Profound Darkness. This time, IMW turn their focus from ire against religion towards rumination on death and the turmoil surrounding the uncertainty thereafter. Tackling as heavy a subject as one could ask for, can In Malices Wake deliver us the cold terror of the grave, or is The Profound Darkness more superficial than theyd like us to think

In Malices Wake on The Profound Darkness still sling a most deathly thrash. The Profound Darkness is supercharged with beefy riffs, pummeling rhythms, and bellowing screams. Testamental groove and Power Tripping hardcore DNA bristle on The Profound Darkness, but In Malices Wake thrash primarily under the schools of Slayer and Sepultura, encrusted with lightning-fast chromatic riffs, punishing and intricate drumming (The Great Purifier) and wailing guitar dives (Numb to Paradise) under the singular aim of sounding as evil as possible. IMWs deeper extreme metal influences manifest in death metal riffing and vox and in the blackened tremolo leads of The Last Song and the Dissection x Slayer The Darkness Below Us. The only major shift from The Blindness of Faith to The Profound Darkness is in editing, as IMWs new record is over ten minutes shorter than their last through tighter songwriting. One things for sure: In Malices Wake are still as hostile as ever.

In Malices Wake sounds great when they hit the right balance of technicality and immediacy. The Profound Darkness is busy, but never noodly or extravagant. Songs like Upon My Flesh and By Tongues of Demons exercise scathing, headbangable riffcraft while fitting in a lot more notes than expected, given their lizard-brained appeal. Similarly, Mark Farrugias sneaks just enough flare into his drumming while keeping to the pocket, dropping some nimble kicks and cymbals over Beyond Death and The Great Purifier amidst his blistering assault on the senses. Small touches make a big difference on The Profound Darkness, most notably the multitudes of brief guitar solos littering songs like Beyond Death, The Darkness Below Us, and The Great Purifier. IMW can shred like crazy but choose to cut themselves short, which keeps The Profound Darkness lean and focused, and the listener wanting more, which there will be. The Profound Darkness is an expertly written and performed album by musicians who know to put the needs of their songs first and when and where to let it rip.

The Profound Darkness is less bloated than The Blindness of Faith, but In Malices Wake lost a little something in the process of slimming down. The Last Song and Away from the Light are as tight and fiery as IMWs best stuff, but lack the breathing room to grow and wrap all of their riffs and ideas into complete packages. The Profound Darkness mix also lacks breathing room, and though its not totally brickwalled, it takes its toll on the ears by the end. Further, these songs arent as memorable as The Blindness of Faith. Ive spent far more time with The Profound Darkness and yet cant recall much from it, as well as the Sepultura-worshiping title track, the mind-freakery of To Die as One, or the tribalistic pulse of Ritual Slaughter. There is variety here, particularly in the blackened opulence of closer The Darkness Below Us, but I wish In Malices Wake had taken just a few more eccentric paths in uncovering The Profound Darkness.

However, whatever problems I see in The Profound Darkness cant detract from its sheer electricity. Every riff hits, every rasp is bilious, and In Malices Wake never let up to give you a chance at getting bored. Old fans wont find much to complain about here. Fans of thrash and/or death yet unfamiliar with IMW may find themselves caught up in the Wake. That promise of a hauntingof coming into gnosis of the paralyzing apprehension of deathis sometimes brushed against. Not many groups even get that, so give The Profound Darkness a shot if your evening plans include mortal dread anywhere.

Thrashmy first love. Before I worshipped at the altars of black and death, my masters cloaked themselves in denim and set my soul on fire with aggressive speed, snotty rebellion, and fist-pumping anthems. Like 2016, the godfathers of thrash have already made the last twelve months a resurgence of the old school, . Newer acts have also made a splash, with and wickedly pummeling our poor score counter into requesting early retirement. 2026 at large betrays no signs of relenting, and thankfully, neither does thrash. Ten years after dropping their 2016 debut, The Unholy Trinity, Californias Nukem reemerges with sophomore effort The Grave Remains. After such a long incubation period, does Nukem prove that they have what it takes to claw out from the grave

Despite forming in 2012, Nukem oozes classic thrash spunk by blurring Bay Area melody with East Coast attitude and gang vocals. , Nuclear Assault, and Overkill influences punctuate The Grave Remains twelve tracks, although flashes of a dozen other bands course through Nukems veins. Guitarist/vocalist Steve Brogdens snarls remind me of s John Kevill mixed with a more pissed-off Mark Osegueda, delivering serrated crossover barks with conviction. Rob Cavestany even makes a guest appearance on Into the Kill Zone, cementing the Death Angel frame of reference. Exodus staples Gary Holt and Lee Altus also sling some riffs on Empress of Evil and Dont Believe a Word respectively, the latter of which is a Thin Lizzy cover. In total, Nukem blends a multitude of inspirations into a confluence of so many thrash wellsprings that they precipitate a voice at once familiar and distinct.

Nukem plays infectiously fun thrash that overflows with shout-along choruses and a bass tone so plump and meaty that it quickly became my favorite aspect of The Grave Remains. Brogdens guitars flit, chug, and cajole throughout the forty-nine minutes, yet bassist Don Lauder steals the spotlight time and again. From the slinky rumble in Unconditional Surrender to the coquettish interplay in Empress of Evil, Lauders bass bounces and parades with low-end jubilance. Torture, Murder, Mutilate! and Random Acts of Violence further emphasize the bass while showcasing Nukems six-string attack, with Xander Gambini augmenting Brogdens core. Additionally, ex-Nukem axe-wielder (and current Dark Angel guitarist) Laura Christine joins her former bandmates and Gary Holt on Empress of Evil, while Random Acts of Violence includes an appearance from Russ Tippins ( and ). Drummer Norm Leggio rounds out the rhythm section, ably pounding out rolls, fills, and tight rhythms in support of Nukems well-crafted performances.

Nukem executes thrash with the eager verve of a hungry up-and-comer, but a couple of missteps limit The Grave Remains ceiling. While the riffs are fine when experienced in isolation, as a whole, they often lack the hooks or memorability to distinguish themselves from one another. The Grave Remains shines brightest during bass performances and rousing choruses, but those two alone cant support an entire thrash album. This issue wouldnt be as glaring if the track lengths were shaved down, but as-is, only two songs (besides needless instrumentals) stay under the four-minute mark, and one of those is a cover. Repeat spins reinforce the opportunity to trim thirty to sixty seconds off several tracks, which would help punch up The Grave Remains and leave listeners craving MOAR. On a positive note, the production glows with a well-balanced mix that supplies ample room for each instrument, and Nukems earnest embrace of head-banging gusto guarantees Im never having a bad time.

Ultimately, Nukem offers a classic thrash platter with a few blemishes I can see, yet easily look past. The Grave Remains wont change the landscape of the genre, but fans will find plenty to enjoy, and despite the melting pot of references, Nukem manages to claim their spot within thrashs wing of the metalsphere. Songs like Unconditional Surrender and Curse of the Devils Bible are welcome earworms that have found homes in my playlists, and I look forward to the next time Nukem asks us to come get some.

By Grin Reaper

When it comes to snakes and music, Im a simple man. I think of Testaments , High on Fires Snakes for the Divine, Deicides Serpents of the Light, and Sir Mix-a-Lot. And now Philadelphias Crotaline slithers in flaunting first-wave-of-black-metal ballads rife with references to snake genitalia. Black metals second wave garners most of the attention, having shaped what most consider to be the genres trve north, but , , , and never would have become what they are without Bathorys lo-fi virulence, Venoms proto-thrashed, punk-informed edgelording, and Celtic Frosts sinister atmospheres and doomy trudges. First-wave black metal fairly characterizes what Crotaline provides on debut The Embrace of Cloacal Desire, as its ridden with direct, unadorned riffing, torturous plods, and a classically DIY aesthetic. Crotalines debut sounds like a blast, and I hope it ismy anaconda dont want none unless its got fun, hun.

In many senses, The Embrace of Cloacal Desire is a primitive album. Crotaline relates carnal tales of ophidian lust in straightforward spurts of stripped-down metal, preferring uncomplicated riffs and instrumentation to deliver their herpetological gospel. In this way, Crotaline reminds me more of Hellhammer than Bathory or Celtic Frost. Tom G. Warriors () first project, Hellhammer distinguished itself more for its chaos and enthusiasm than its execution. Similarly, The Embrace of Cloacal Desire attacks with zealous verve, flitting through nine tracks of intermittently thrashy and doom-laden black metal. Despite the bold mashup of genres, though, Crotaline never quite brings their fangs within striking distance.

Two primary issues plague The Embrace of Cloacal Desire, and each boils down to the same root causesimplicity. While the drums supply a commendable rhythmic thunder, mostly Crotalines performance either plays too safe or lacks the technical firepower to achieve big moments. After a protracted minute-and-a-half intro, opener Breeding the End gets properly started. Unleashing a classic thrash riff recalling Bonded by Blood-era , a peppy bass groove joins in to underpin the melody. The pace slows at the chorus, cutting to a second riff before wending back to the main one. Widows Web kicks in next, treating listeners to a Venom-meets-Bathory hook that, just like the preceding song, tamps the brakes for vocals and a bridge. The pattern wears thin quickly, and The Embrace of Cloacal Desire suffers from this constricted songwritingparticularly in the back half. Too many half-formed ideas reach for big moments, only to topple into funereal crawls. For an album dedicated to dangerous snakes and sex organs, too often Im left unthrilled and unfulfilled.

Ultimately, the lack of memorable passages and songs leaves The Embrace of Cloacal Desire as drab and listless as a shed snakeskin. Solid building blocks reside in Crotalines DNA, but the shapes of their assembled structures never coalesce into more than their constituent components. Where varying tempos can effectively lead to dynamic pacing and musical climaxes, Crotalines overuse of the fast-to-slow momentum shifts undercuts their songwriting. As the Serpents Feast exits the chorus and launches into a punky bridge begging for a wailing solo, but instead delivers an understated, unconvincing lead lacking excitement and dexterity. Red Moon of Despair starts promisingly enough, yet drops to a two-minute slog of glacial pacing. The same framework repeats on Beneath the Reeds, and yet again on Hemipenes The Embrace of Cloacal Desire. Rather than mirroring a narrative or cleverly subverting expectations, these pivots can seem haphazard or lazy, leading to either frustration or boredom.

In spite of a great album concept and comparisons to bands I enjoy, Crotalines debut fails to charm my snake. Predictable songwriting and uninspired performances make The Embrace of Cloacal Desires thirty-five minutes feel longer than they are, and no song manages to entirely sidestep these issues. Even so, it takes guts to write this wild shit, and even more so to memorialize these ideas in song. Venom lurks within Crotaline, but the band needs to retool their bite. Hopefully they can figure it out and give us a rousing sophomore resurgence. Until then, Im left to wonder if maybe Im bored with it, or maybe its Crotaline.
